Is "Organic" Better For You?

Hello KMPM Readers!

The term organic has become much of a buzz word in the world of health and fitness for quite some time now. There are a lot of misconceptions in regards to organic products and what exactly is organic and why is it better for you than non organic products. Today I wish to enlighten you on what organic products are, what makes them organic and some suggestions for when you hit the grocery store next. Take this with you.

Organic refers to the way in which farmer’s grow and process agricultural products. Organic farming practices are designed to meet the following goals:

  • Enhance soil and water quality

  • Reduce pollution

  • Provide safe, healthy livestock habitats

  • Enable natural livestock behaviors

  • Promote a self-sustaining cycle of resources on a farm.

The terms, “organic” and “natural” are most commonly used interchangeably. Well that is incorrect. “Natural” means no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. So make sure you do not confuse the two for meaning the same thing. Organic foods have the potential benefits of having slightly more nutrients than conventionally grown foods, slightly more omega 3 fatty acids in organic meats compared to non organic, less toxic metals, less pesticide residue, and less potential for bacteria in the meats.

On average, those who buy organic products spend 50% more than on conventionally grown produce or meats. And there are no telling if there still aren’t traces of pesticides on the organic products. The natural pesticide, Rotenone, for example, causes Parkinson’s symptoms when injected into rats.
